Extrovert Extra Work
As an extrovert reading Quiet I found it interesting that the book says that extroversion is the cultural ideal. I do find it easier to get along with people and to be in group situations but I also find it harder to concentrate on my studies. I can focus on the subject matter and try my best to answer the questions or solve the situation to the best of my ability but if I don't put myself in the right study situation or environment, I have a hard time keeping to my own thoughts. I find myself more interested in the conversations around me or even just the people. This is one down fall to being such a people person. I find them to be more interesting then what I should be paying attention to. I am better off in group situations and having other people critique my work, as an art student I enjoy having other people's opinions on my work even minor steps in the process of my projects/ assignments. So in some situations I find it easier to be an extrovert, such as being an art student. The fact that we have to have periodic checking of our assignments it is easier for me to allow them to see and check my unfinished work. Although, it is harder for me in say a math course where I need to be focused on one problem at a time. Over all I believe that me being an extrovert can help and hurt me at the same time with my studies.

I’ll start by saying I enjoyed reading your post! It seems that you are very well suited for the real world once all your schooling is complete. The ability to want people to critique your work without getting offended is a characteristic I feel is hard to come by. It seems most people just want to be perfect or have the “my way or the highway” mentality. As for the study issues, maybe you are slightly introverted because you can’t do what you need to do with things going on in the background… or maybe it’s just a little ADD.
ReplyDeleteI find myself in the same situations when I am with people. Trying to study is the hardest thing when others are around. I would much rather keep myself in a room that has smaller distractions to keep me busy when I am too bored but it helps me try to keep my focus on the studies themselves. I would love to sit outside and read instead of sitting in my room with the blinds closed because I can’t focus any other way because all I do is look around and talk to the people walking past or watch the bird that seems to be having more fun than me reading. So I know what you mean you need to be around people but I also find myself not wanting to be around them when I finally have the chance.
ReplyDeleteYour post has made me wonder about the extrovert connection to an inability to concentrate, as I am the same most of the time. Math in particular is a subject that I have a hard time with, and I can not get any work done if the television is on, it is just way too distracting. I wonder if the extrovert is inclined to not be able to turn off the interaction? Any way, great post, very thoughtful!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger I always enjoyed being around people. Now as I have grown up and have seen more of what people are made of I tend to keep more to myself. I do completely understand having a hard time concentrating during lectures. I much prefer to be hands on learning.
