My Introverted Self

In a world full of extroverts I am not afraid to admit that I am a true introvert at heart, but not so much when it comes to my learning. I can manage with both individual work and group work, although working alone gives me more opportunities to express my own opinions. I tend to be fine with some alone time and sometimes prefer it because I get to do whatever I want and not have to adjust for anyone. In certain classroom settings, if it is not required or necessary for me to speak up, then I won’t. If there is a problem or something that will affect my learning, then I make sure to get all the facts I need to do my work. So basically I’m an introverted person, but slightly extroverted when it come to my learning. I believe that being an introvert enhances my learning and how I learn because I am not easily distracted by other people and what they have going on in their life. I get more time to focus on my school work, and that is a bonus with my workload. Depending on the situation, I like working as a team over working on my own because it’s helpful sometimes to hear what others have to say. I don’t mind talking to other people or asking for help when I have to because that could be beneficial for me.

I enjoyed reading the beginning of this book because it does not devalues introverts or make it seem like extroverts have power over introverts. There are good qualities in both introverted and extroverted personality types. From the pressures of society, many introverts feel like they have to change who they really are to please others, and people shouldn't be made to feel like that. I don’t think that I can ever be that person that makes sure that they are heard by everyone. I am content with being alone and not always being busy, and not everyone gets that.

  1. I feel I am leaning more towards being an extrovert so I was very interested in reading the point of view of an introvert. I feel there have been several times in my life, and still are, that I can be and feel more introvert. I really dislike group projects, I prefer to work on my own. I don’t really care to work with strangers, although if they are extrovert enough then I find I can quickly become more comfortable. I always wanted to be an extrovert growing up and in high school, but as I’ve gotten older I wish I had more of an introverted side, been able to focus more and not care about others opinions.

  2. You sound extremely balanced Rose. Your explanation is smooth and without even the slightest hint of being uncomfortable, because I’m sure you’re not. Like Quiet, you give some nice examples to ponder regarding your abilities to study alone, yet just as evenly, you can be around others. You don’t raise or lower either the extroverted or introverted side, to make more room for the other, which is refreshing.

We do differ slightly in opinions regarding my take on the segregation of introverts/extroverts. I felt the book was getting into the habit of “lamb basting” the extroverts as pompous know it alls, which looked down upon these quiet introverts, which ultimately had more power than they did, just secretly. But I agree that when it looked at queries of the two groups, that many held beliefs of one being superior than the other, it often showed a common balance.

    Nice post Rose. Thank you.
