Like a few others, I don’t remember anything about
this case. I don’t remember hearing about it or even acknowledging what was
going on. I would have been about 18 at the time and probably was paying more
attention to studying than the news. I think that the reason this case was so
sensationalized in the media is because nobody could believe that this woman
committed this murder. It was shocking and unfortunately entertaining. Murderers become a type of celebrity. As a
nation we tend to become media obsessed with “train wreck situations”. We just
cannot get enough. We look at things like the trial and have to know every
detail. Why did she do it? What would
drive a pretty young woman to something as extreme as this? Was he abusive? Was
she defending herself? We find ourselves needing to know every bit of
information we can from the case for entertainment. What’s sad is that she
became famous for murdering someone, that many people for a long time will
remember her name, but probably won’t be able to tell you the name of who she
killed. The fact that this became a life time movie proves my point. We shouldn’t
be making people famous for murder. This shouldn’t have been about Jodi. It
should have been about Travis. I can’t imagine waking up in the morning and
having to watch a lifetime movie about my brother after he was murdered by his
ex-girlfriend just because other people found it “interesting”. Cases like this
shouldn’t be forgotten but they also shouldn’t be used for entertainment
purposes.
I completely agree when you stated that the media was paying a lot more attention to this case because of the women committing the murder. Murders do gay type of celebrity title to them everything that most people watch on television these days are about people killing people and seeing at the bad guy gets caught or not. I also feel that the time of them murder should have been more about Travis than about Jodi like you said. This case should be remembered because it was very traumatic for Travis's family the others should not be earning money because of someone's death.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these sort of cases are used as entertainment and are used to get the views and ratings up for networks and it is so wrong. They shouldn't be broadcasting something so horrible just to get more peoples attention and keep doing it over and over.
ReplyDeleteI also don’t recall this case much from the time period it went on. I’m sure it was popular during its peak of coverage respectively. I also wasn’t paying close attention to the news during that time period. It was rather scandalous the way the case seemed to get blown out of proportion by the media. That’s not to say it didn’t deserve attention, just not international attention and there certainly shouldn’t have been Hollywood actors brought in for their thoughts on a crime. Crime is certainly not something to be made a spectacle of and that is exactly what the media did to this case.
ReplyDeleteI agree we have a need for information with "train wreck situations" I am with you it should have been about Travis getting the justice he deserved. In the end I am not sure why the media feels the need to turn murderers of any sex, race, or religion into Celebrities as if we don't have enough other things to contend with in life than who did what to whom and where it was done. I firmly believe all court cases so be left out of the media as its not like we are the jury.
