We Love the Drama

I believe the Jodi Arias trial became so popular because of the amount of media coverage it received. It was plastered all over the internet and every news station even though it seemed so obvious that Arias was guilty. I’m not exactly sure why this case in particular sparked such flame however it seemed everyone was interested. I think that the general public in a way feeds off this sort of thing and that’s why it lasted as long as it did. If no one was watching it or keeping up with the story it would have been off the air way before it was otherwise. I know these types of things happen all over the world and way more frequently than we probably think but Arias really made it interesting the way she took on the trial period. She repeatedly changed her story of what happened and where she was the day of the murder and defended herself for 18 days which made the jury question her credibility but I think it also made viewers and followers even more interested. She confused so many people with her conflicting stories that no one really knew what to think. Even though there were plenty of things that made her look guilty, she got away with it longer than she should have. I would imagine that would be a tough decision for a jury to make because of how many stories they received but overall that really just hurt her. It might have drawn out the process but in my opinion her changing stories so often is one of the main reasons she was found guilty.

  1. I think many of your points are spot on. The media made this case into a spectacle and garnered a ton of ratings from it as America bought in to the whole thing. Arias herself really made it worse with all of her interviews and her ever-changing stories. I too think that her changing stories helped to seal her fate. They proved that she was a bold-faced liar and couldn't be trusted. If she really did it out of self-defense as she eventually claimed she should have gone with that story right from the beginning. Instead, I think probably very few people find any validity in that claim now.

  2. Alison,
I also agree with you that the amount of coverage this trial received caused it to be even popular with the people. Changing her story so many times also makes people spectacle because they don't know what is actually the truth. If she lied at first and then decided to tell the truth, how would the jury really know she was telling the truth because she already had lied to them once. She, obviously, would do it again. I also loved your title, "We love the drama". I think things like this trial where people love to debate with others and express their thoughts is also what made people gravitate towards being so involved in the trial. I enjoyed your post!

  3. Many great points and very valid information. The media attention that this case received definitely sucked in the attention of the public and with the constant gain of information that came out in this case made the views of the people change towards feeling as if she were a victim to more so her just being a cold blooded killer
