Conform or Suffer

In thinking of a modern day “witch hunt” a few come to mind.  The “witch hunt” against someone who doesn’t conform to what society believes is often a topic of conversation on social media.  One such non conforming couple is Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar.

They recently came under fire regarding a fan request they posted on Facebook.  The Duggar’s asked fans to post pictures of them kissing their spouses.  Nothing was said in their post about posting pictures of a man and woman kissing, so same sex couples posted pictures.  They have come under criticism for possibly deleting the pictures of the same sex couples kissing.

Society today has a more open view on what a marriage should look like.  The Duggar’s still believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman.  Should they really be made to feel bad about their beliefs and then mistreated because of them?  The same can be said in The Crucible.  Tituba was practicing a belief that she believed in during her dancing and singing in the woods with the other girls.  She saw nothing wrong with the practice as this was her belief but then due to people being afraid of what they don’t know or don’t believe in she was persecuted for those same beliefs.

At least now, men and women aren’t put to death for their beliefs in something that doesn’t conform to normal standards.  We, as a society, have learned to grow and become more tolerant of each other and our beliefs.  We still have a ways to go though.  We need to come to a point where we can’t recall and modern day “witch hunts”.  These persecutions need to become a thing of the past.

  1. I did not know about the Duggar family doing that.. very interesting. That is a great comparison to The Crucible. It is funny how ever since we were little we have been told to be ourselves because being unique is a good thing. Yet, as soon as we show a unique side, we are criticized. Nothing is wrong with the same sex marriage, but since the Duggar's aren't used to it, it is wrong. Tituba was trying something different, so it was automatically wrong? I agree with you that people do not go to jail or are killed because of a different belief. However, there are many riots that go on especially with gays that turn into death of individuals or high school kids being killed because of their sexuality. So it is partly there.

  2. I am very thankful for the fact death is not the immediate answer for non-conformity but there is still punishment. Whether you believe in same sex marriage makes no mind to me although I am very traditional, I know my beliefs and I own them myself, but to not conform to society's view of normal is to be labeled. In the time setting of the book it was a label of witch, these days it is a different label but still a label.

  3. I almost wrote my blog on political correctness. Recent years have seen PC-ism reach a fever pitch. I agree with you on the treatment of many devout Christians such as the Duggars. I can't understand why people who demand tolerance for all are so quick to ostracize anybody who sees the world differently than they do. The pendulum has swung so far in the other direction that we are seeing witch hunts of people who don't conform entirely to the current politically correct platform.
