Witchcraft and Ebola
Witchcraft seems to have been a big deal back in the early 1690's. In the Crucible, there are children who have gotten ill and, their parents think that witchcraft is behind because they think they witnessed it. A modern day "witch hunt" would be something like the Ebola that has been going around the United States and campus for quite some time. They say that Ebola started over in South Africa (I think), and people who have traveled from there to the United states have brought this Ebola disease with them. So, doctors in so many hospital have been trying to track down who had the Ebola disease first. They try to see who the person with Ebola has been with and try to track the person who had it first that way. It is similar to the witch hunt in The Crucible because many people around the world are getting this Ebola virus just by being around people who have Ebola in the first place. So, in The Crucible, the characters try to find out who started the witchcraft by tracking down everyone who had been around witchcraft at the time. The difference would be that in The Crucible, it was all about the witchcraft. In today's society, it would be about the Ebola disease that's been going around the world. They had to be worried about witchcraft and religion while today people are concerned that they are going to get sick and want to quarantine the ones who may have contracted the disease.

While there is a bit of delusion and panic over Ebola, I can understand people's concerns. While hard to transmit the disease, it is one of the deadliest viruses known to man. While the chances of a mass outbreak is low, the reality of a pandemic would be devastating to both society and our economy. I have no problem with quarantining people for a few weeks who are exposed to the virus.
ReplyDeleteThe Ebola "outbreak" in the US is a bit of a delusion. We are fearing for this disease even more than any other. Yes, it is scary, but right now we are losing more people to the flu than Ebola in the US. It's an irrational though process that focuses so much on one aspect instead of the holistic picture. We should worry about the health of America in general and treat more present diseases, instead of a potential risk. Ebola is being handles very poorly anyway. To stop a disease we need to fight it at its source, not just by watching people who are flying to the US.
ReplyDeleteI happen to think that you made a great comparison in today's society versus the Crucible. I understand exactly where you were coming from in the article. I like how you stated that they tried to find who started the witch madness and here we try to find who has it to try to eliminate the spread of it. I really enjoyed reading your article you did a great job in my opinion!
