Escape from Reality

There is an idealism that everybody wants to believe in. It is human nature to think fondly of the past, always believing that there were good old days of our youth or that time when our ancestors lived. Much like thinking back on past relationships, we are prone to remember only the good moments and forget all those things that resulted in the relationship ending.
As we live our lives, we spend the vast majority of our time working, sleeping and accomplishing mundane tasks. The creative part of our brains are prone to escape this humdrum existence and map out an adventurous alternative reality. History is replete with literature such as Beowulf and King Arthur where man has created a fantasy world full of adventure and mythical quests. Elements of feudalism, chivalry, adventure and exploration are woven into these stories. We see current examples of these classic stories in Game of Thrones where lords and ladies fight each other as well as supernatural beasts in a mythical land similar to medieval England.
As a fan of the show, I have to admit being fascinated with the concept of this mystical world. I grew up reading about Robin Hood and my favorite movie is Princess Bride. I often look out at the stars and imagine what these worlds are like. Is there a planet halfway across the galaxy where dragons and valiant warriors clash much like the HBO series? The mind can’t help but create these fantastical worlds while trapped in such a drab reality.

  1. wow this is a really good post and i completely agree with the valid points you made. Your post made me rethink about alot of memories and how i tend to only focus on the good moments rather then the bad because looking back at the good moments can put you in a better mood i liked your post alot

  2. The monotony of our daily lives as we grow up is definitely a big contributor towards why we enjoy a good fantasy story. When the majority of our life consists of sleep, school, and work, watching interesting lives and fascinating stories unfold works wonders for stimulating our imagination and creativity. No fantasy story shows a main character driving, working, and sleeping for 18 hours a day, as that's not what fantasy is about.

  3. I really enjoyed your post. I have to agree that we often create these fantasy worlds to escape, even if its just for a little while. I know people who like video games and things of that nature because it allows them to focus on these fantasy worlds created on the game. They can become whatever they want in these games. I think its good to get away and think of these fantasy worlds because it helps with creativity.
