The Star Wars: A New Hope movie follows along a simple plot and storyline we all grow up with. The princess gets kidnapped and the hero saves her. I'm not going to lie, I was never a fan of the Star Wars movies so it was particularly hard for me to watch. Going back to childhood many of us were always imagining ourselves as princesses with our prince to come rescue us. Not to mention the movies we watch as children that show the beautiful princess who is rescued by her prince charming. We are conditioned from a very young age to have the notion to believe in the fairytale. Also, it's called imagination. We are born with imagination, whatever our circumstances we still are able to imagine something better. Maybe its the brain constantly wanting something better and therefore we think up many out of the ordinary situations or unrealistic situations.
Even as adults we do relate very well to unrealistic and fantasy situations. Whether you are reading romance or watching a movie set in a fantasy land, a part of many of us wish to be there rather than where we are currently at. As we grow into adults we relate less to childhood fantasy and imaginations but more to adult situations but we still relate to them. Becoming more grown up means more responsibility and dang, life is hard. We spend most of our young lives wishing to be older and once we get there we wish we were younger again. I think that is why we relate better to the fantasy world. The fantasy world seems a much better option that the real world. In the fantasy worlds we read or see there is not pressing issues of money, jobs or responsibilities. I know that when I read a novel that is of high interest to me I come out of that read feel let down, there was so much more to look forward to on each page of the book and once its finished, the reality sets back in, there is no gorgeous prince charming awaiting or bank full of money to spend, we are back to the reality. Fantasy worlds give us an escape, something easy to think about and spend time doing for at least a little bit.
I agree with your post 100%. I also think that the fantasy world is an escape for some. It lets us not have to think about our adult lives and responsibilities for a little while. We can just enjoy the time spent watching a movie or reading a good book. Like you said there is a feeling of being let down when the book or movie ends. We want it to continue but it can't.
ReplyDeleteOur imaginations definitely grow like crazy when we're little, and then settle down a bit, combining our life experiences with the fantasy side as we grow up. We learn to appreciate all sides of a well-told story, and may feel a bit disappointed when it ends. However, I think even if someone had the most enjoyable real life out there, they'd still be disappointed when a great story ends. That's why fantasy's so great. It's less an escape, and more an enjoyable, relatable journey we can read or watch through.
