Modern day witch-hunt has changed since the witch-hunt in The Crucible. For example there is a battle against fat.
There are people out there encouraging weight loss for people that are
overweight, which is not a bad thing. Those
that are targeting fat people justify themselves both with public health fights
and with financial fear that the overweight people will empty everyone’s
pockets to pay for their additional medical requirements. Also people they that
their laziness and greed is a deadly sin. This is not a problem with me. I feel
like people should be happy in their bodies no matter how it looks. If you
choose to be overweight then that is your choice, but do not complain about it
later. This is just one thing in modern day we sit here and complain about.
There is plenty of more. Just like in the book The Crucible, people would riot and the whole community would get
involved. There would be people that were on one side of the argument and people
on the other side. What is different about the witch-hunt I am talking about
and the witch-hunt in The Crucible is
that the people that were against overweight people won’t kill or try to put
them into jail. They are just simply trying to help. I am not saying there is
some people that don’t want to do those things to them, but those people are
just plain harsh. In the book anyone that has been “cursed” by the devil should
be killed. Also that the modern day witch hunt I am stating is about overweight
and in the book it is about actually witches, but that is stating the obvious.
Krystal,
ReplyDeleteGood point about how people should be happy in their bodies and not complaining for the choices they made. What you eat and how you treat your body is up to you, although some people can’t control how they look. I don’t believe that people should target heavier people. If you feel like you are at such a risk of your pocket’s being emptied out, then you should try to help them instead of bashing them and making them feel humiliated. I feel like the topic of obesity will always be of concern because people aren’t getting smaller and they are having more health problems.
Brilliant thoughts! I had never made this connection, I think you are right! It is a daily occurrence for me to open my email or Facebook and find some kind of weight loss scheme or program, people trying to get your money to help you lose weight.
ReplyDeleteKrystal,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in everything that you say. People should be able to be happy in their own body no matter their weight. People, also, should not be judged depending on how much they weight. It doesn't change them as a person. Some people who are overweight actually cannot help it and it could be a physical problem or a mental problem. In my psychology class, they talked about certain mental disorders where people rely on food for emotional reasons. Some people also could have a disease that enables them from being able to loose weight. No one actually knows what are going on in everyone's life. Therefore, just because someone is overweight, people don't know why and shouldn't assume it's because they like to eat a lot of food. I know some people who can eat just a salad for dinner and gain five pounds. You just never know why some people are the way they are, and sometimes they cannot help it.
I do agree with what you had to say about this post. I think that the witch hunt you are referring to could even be extended as far as social comparison goes. There are people who are not overweight who feel as though they are because of the way society has engraved certain standards into our heads. The most recent thing I can think of is Calvin Klein. I feel like people are on a witch hunt after him because of his choice to use a size 10 model as a "plus sized" model. There are standards that everybody is trying to live by and the more standards that are put out there, I think the more witch hunts are going to occur.
ReplyDeleteAwesome job relating obesity to witch hunts. I think obese individuals are immediately judged by society and seen as "lazy" and "unhealthy eaters" when sometimes it's just not true. But we automatically assume these things as we automatically assume some people are "witches" for things they do. Sometimes obese individuals become obese for none of the reasons listed above. I have a grandfather who was literally a rail for all his life until he got a brain tumor. He gained weight so fast and got up around 300 pounds. He couldn't help it but he was immediately judged and is still judged because it's hard for him to get his weight back down because he is much older. He isn't "lazy", an "unhealthy eater", or a "witch" at all.
ReplyDeleteI personally like your thought here. I struggled through high school with a weight issue and this post sort of hit close to home. I was picked on daily as I was over weight and had very few friends. I have just recently lost over 100 lbs and I couldnt be more happier. I do have an issue though because when I look in the mirror I see the same person I was 100 lbs ago and all the mean comments are burned into my head.
