Perceived Ideas Are Not Always The Right Ideas

Nowadays, there are so many different perceived thoughts as to the right way how to live life. People tend to believe their opinion is the right opinion and everyone else’s opinion is wrong. Due to that reason, wars break out all over the world, discrimination against other ethnicities occurs, judgments against people who are gay are made and so many other controversies are happening all around the world. One of the most common thought in the world is that everyone should wait until they are married to start a family.
Many teenagers are becoming pregnant at a young age and many of them are treated differently because they are pregnant. I believe this is considered a modern day “witch hunt” because people are being accused of wrong doing regardless whether or not the people judging know the teenager’s background. The teenager could not experience any attention at home, and that was the only way her parents or guardian would pay attention to her. In reality, she could have been raped or sexually abused and unfortunately became pregnant. People tend to immediately judge the teenager and think that she doesn't respect herself, she doesn't care about her life and her future, or that she is so irresponsible. Currently, many teenagers have begun to engage in sexual activity at such a young age, but not all become pregnant. Those who do become pregnant happened to get singled out or even shunned by society because she happened to become pregnant.

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a play about a town’s perceived ideas about how life is supposed to be lived. If someone were caught dancing, singing, drinking blood or acting the way they were not supposed to, they were considered a witch or practicing witchcraft. When Abigail and the girls were accused of engaging in witchcraft, the town went crazy. Many perceived thoughts went around that they were witches and practiced evil. All of these thoughts were based upon someone thinking they may have saw someone dancing and no one actually having proof or knowing the facts about what was actually happening. This “witch hunt” is similar to the modern day “witch hunt” about teenagers becoming pregnant because no one knows how or why she became pregnant. They don’t know the true fact about whether she was simply just irresponsible or if she was abused, so going off of what people say or think they know is not something that people should rely on. People may think of the teenagers who are pregnant as a “witch” because they aren't following their perceived thoughts about life. This is similar to in The Crucible when people thought Abigail and the girls were witches just because they were caught dancing around a fire.

  1. I think one of the biggest issue people have is not willing to hear other peoples thought or as you put it opinions. You made some really good points like discrimination and gay rights. Teen pregnancy has become such a big issue now a day. You made another good point about people judging to quick because you are right we don’t know what has happen to them. The MTV show 16 & Pregnant probably made this issue better, but then made it worse. Now people are starting to feel like they are getting pregnant just to be on the show. That is a whole other conversation though. This was a really good post!

  2. oh good point, you found several comparisons. So many people go crazy over things like gay marriage or religious beliefs, the persecutions are so great that we end up having many modern day "witch hunts" among us. We are all so stubborn it causes us to not take a look at anyone else's point of view, just wanting to be right.

  3. I think that your post made a lot of interesting points. In all honesty, it does not matter where we turn. We can find a witch hunt in any circumstance because everybody does hold different opinions and if someone's is different than the person's standing next to them, war does break loose. There are very little "agree to disagree" left in the world. The scene in The Crucible where the girls are dancing, so many people these days would be hanged for something along those lines because people are much more open about letting that out in public. We are still judged by it and others have things to say, but it has gotten to the point that people just care less. Even though that care has dropped, witch hunts are still present and occur every day. I really liked reading your post.
