A woman put in the position of the two jurors in “Her
America” would have many issues of conformity and individuality and the
conflict between finding the right combination of the two to make the right
decision. In this case it especially
hard for a women in particular. Domestic
violence against who has a huge impact on everyone around the case. Domestic violence against women is like
killing a cop. If you kill a cop you
have the whole force after you with no mercy from the courts. If you domestically abuse a women you have
every women in the world who knows about it grabbing at your throat. So these women have to deal with the social
norms of how heavily domestic violence is view and weather they are to conform
to that or not. It seems like they would
just fall in the same category of every other women but there is a twist. They personally
knew the couple in question. This gives
them plenty more insight to make an individual opinion about the case rather
than conforming to the common view. That
is just to gender part of it. They also
have to take common law into account.
They have to determine whether they thought it was self-defense and also
who used deadly force first. They must
also consider if there were previous incidents which there were. From a common law stand point this would be a
clear cut homicide case but since the parties involved have personal insight
there interpretations of the law may change a little bit if you catch my
drift. So all in all these women have
pressures coming from every which direction and the author Susan Glaspell does
a great job of showing the opposing viewpoints from both the males and females on
a criminal or personal level. She shows
the personal insight and backgrounds which make the problem all the more
emotional and harder to solve.
I honestly loved your comparison of the cops in the force and the women defending their gender. I thought that was a pretty interesting way to describe your point. I found this story to be pretty intense. You're right, they did know them personally so their insight is going to be a little different from that of someone who didn't know them. I can see where the struggle for them is coming from because of the social norms they could possibly go against during this story. All in all, they could potentially be a part of that person that the rest of the group would want to go after if they made a decision that was opposite of what the social norms find correct. People often overlook the concrete evidence and let their emotions take over. I thought this was really interesting and you made really awesome comparisons and points.
