Sanctuary

Real life is fine and all, but overtime it can get pretty boring.  People find an escape for themselves in different ways.  In this case, a fantasy world can serve as such.  Characters from a fantasy world help people imagine themselves as that character that isn’t lacking in excitement.  Or maybe someone wishes they could be more brave like Luke Skywalker or adventurous like Han Solo, so they develop a connection with the character where they yearn to have that trait they feel they are missing.  For all we know, George Lucas directed Star Wars both for fun and to leave a political message.  I don’t know his political views on the government but it’s interesting that the Empire (government) controls everything almost, and the Rebels (citizens) fight back.  Now again, I don’t know if this is supposed to be a hidden message about George Lucas’s views on the government as being tyrannical or overly controlling but that is the beauty of fantasy worlds.  Everyone deciphers a fantasy world in a different way that suits what they wish to see and believe.  If a hidden message is conveyed in a fantasy work that people begin to pick up on, the argument can be made that it’s fantasy and no such connection to real life exists.  This creates an iron curtain of safety for the creator of the fantasy world as the fantasy is not real, yet the message can still be put out for all to see.  It becomes a whole new world to explore that peaks the curiosity and sends our imaginations running wild, which reminds us that the kid in us hasn’t gone for good as we age.  So whether fantasy worlds are a way to escape or safely speak your mind in your own way as the creator of that fantasy, either way it gives us a little enjoyment that we didn’t have before.
