Cyber Witch Hunt

Recent incident with parallels to The Crucibles is gamergate scandal. Such as The Crucibles the gamergate scandal is accusing this woman of something that she did not commit. In the witch hunts the towns people could just say something very small and be accused of murder.   In the crucibles a man just says that his wife is reading books so she must be a witch. These people were punished for things that they did not do because of the beliefs that most people had about the devil wanting to change people for the worst. Making others treat the people that were said to see the devil badly until they were hanged, stone, or whatever the court decided to do.
With the gamergate this lady was a video game developer and was accused of dating a journalist for positive support and media help for her game she released. Her ex boyfriend started everything saying that she was dating this journalist for good reviews for her game. This started uproar for the game developer Zoe Quinn and those who she worked with and were around. Many of the women involved were harassed, threaten with violence, and had their personal information given out to the world that they had to move from their homes this included Zoe Quinn herself.

Still today people start accusations about others because they want to hurt someone or get themselves out of the trouble they might have started. Towards the end of the witch hunts we find out that it was all lies from a group of girls wanting to have some fun. Just like the gamergate we find ourselves lying and hurting others just for fun and wanting to hurt those that hurt us in some way. Who knows when this will end?

  1. The situation that happened with the girls in The Crucible reminds me of petty girls in high school. These high schoolers just like the girls in the book just want to start rumors of the girls, so that they would get in trouble. The similarity with high school girls and the girls in The Crucible is that they enjoy making rumors about others to either make themselves feel better or to get them in trouble with the teachers just for fun. But, obviously the difference is that there is no specific hunt for these girls in high school. This will constantly go on because we always want to feel good about yourselves so if that means starting rumors about others we will. We like the attention off of us sometimes and make all the bad attention on others.

  2. I've never actually heard of the gamergate scandal but it sounds like a great comparison from the way you made it sound. I think it's absolutely crazy how much people will believe just by word of mouth without any actual proof. This was a huge issue in The Crucible and obviously was a problem with this scandal. Unfortunately, I don't think this will ever end. People will always be naive and listen to everything they hear and we will probably also continue to hurt other people to benefit ourselves. The world would be a much better place if we didn't but I don't see that happening in the near future.
