The world full of witch hunts

I think that in the modern day there are many witch hunts that occur for whatever reason.  It parallels with discrimination.  One of my favorites come from our lovely government.  After all of the shootings nationwide it seemed that the government went on a witch hunt against those that have and use weapons.  There was a massive call against any form of guns and bullets because apparently they make people shoot other people and cause violence.  There wasn't a lot of research and effort put forth to hear all sides, instead it was a huge push to get all form of guns off the market and make them damn near impossible to purchase.  They not only tried to control our guns but also made ammunition near impossible to afford.  Instead of following the process of laws, our rights to bear arms was under attack just as those innocent people in The Crucible became under attack.  Alike the book, the shootings that occurred in this country caused massive panic.  When people panic all sense is thrown to the wind and the extremists have free reign.  The mass panic created by the threat of witches in The Crucible caused many deaths because rather than think logically people wanted to believe the worst, which unfortunately ended badly for many citizens.  Fortunately in this situation no one was put on the chopping block and killed due to the panic of many but our freedoms were threatened and still continue to be.  Many of the times our modern day witch hunts are in benefit to those who want something but cannot attain it without using terrible situations to their benefit.  This was not the case so much in the book.  The accusers were protecting themselves from getting into trouble regardless of the cost to others but other than preventing themselves from being named as witches it did not benefit them.

  1. You're totally right that the gun control crisis being a sort of "witch hunt." The panic thrown into society with witches seems completely absurd to us, but when we really think about how paranoia is used in today's government to catalyze a movement against something it doesn't seem so strange. The tactic is used all the time.

  2. I think this was a great comparison. The government definitely did try and make things difficult for gun owners and in turn it challenged the right we have to bear arms. It's a little frustrating that every time something happens there is such a massive panic because that's when irrational decisions are made but I don't think that will ever change. Usually something bad needs to happen before we can get a point across,
