I do believe there are still modern day witch hunts. Just
recently, the Pennsylvania state police was searching for Eric Frein, who
killed and injured conventional officers. These police officers were on a
mission for more than a month in order to find Frein, so they can put him in
jail for life or to give him the death penalty. Another witch craft is the
search for Osama Bin Ladan. These are classified as witch crafts because they could
be a threat to our community. Frein was found all around the state of Pennsylvania
and even though the police did not believe he would hurt anyone he was still a
threat, no one knew the next move he would take. Osama Bin Laden was a threat because
he was in charge of al - qaeda, which was a threat not to just our small
community but the entire United States. If he was not found there was a chance
of another terrorist attack.
Many people suggest that witch
craft that happens during present time
are psychics or mediums - able to talk to people who have passed. People
believe that this is a form of witchcraft, just like when the group of girls
and Tituba was dancing in the forest. Just like the book, people believed that
witch craft - either dancing in the book or mediums in present time - were/are
evil and came from the devil. They believed that killing these people were okay because they brought evil to the community. We are in the same mid-set, the stipulations are obviously different, but most of us believe if someone brings evil the community they should die or be in prison for the rest of their lives.
There
is a little difference between the witch hunt from present time and in The Crucible, the girls blamed others
for the same thing that they were accused of, so they wouldn't be punished.
Whereas, Frein and Osama accepted the blame because they knew there was proof.
Mediums and psychics are not afraid to say that what they do is real and they
do not point fingers. Frien and Osama had evidence against them, that they did
the crime, but during the time period in The
Crucible there was no evidence to prove that what they did was witch craft
or illegally unless there were witnesses.
Taylor we hit the same note with the witch hunts of the Crucible being the same as the witch hunts of today. the "blame"...it seems to come out of nowhere and can apparently start pointing in any direction. It's like a combination of Chicken Little saying the sky is falling and the Spanish Inquisition. And like you mentioned with the Crucible, there is basically little to no evidence between the accused and the finger pointers. Nice post, thank you.
ReplyDeleteEric Frein was actually in my hoe town. My high school had to be shut down for plenty of days because people kept saying that he was on property of my high school. That had to be such a scary feeling and I am glad they finally caught him. Like you said if someone does bring evil to a community something bad needs to happen to them like they did to us. Frien and Osama did have a lot of evidence on them and they knew multiple people was after them, but deep down inside of them, I know they wanted to blame someone else for either actions, but I hope they don’t try. I like that you added someone from the past and someone that is resent in this blog. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteThese are all great examples! Modern day witch hunts occur all the time. Thankfully, in modern times, we do need more evidence and use more logic than was used in the Crucible. The PA man was a good example because it was actually a physical hunt for someone on the run. I think Osama is kind of a different example because he was actually guilty and the people accused in the Crucible were actually innocent. I think the ritual they were playing out in the book could be related to some of the world's religions. I think sometimes, we do mis-identify someone as guilty, which is something the justice system needs to work on.
