Ree the Courageous

Winter's Bone had a few characters that stood out to me who carried very strong personalities, but the one I was intrigued by the most would be Ree Dolly. She is strong, hardworking, independent, and a go-getter. Although she puts on a good front and does not show a lot of emotion, she also has a soft side, she cares deeply about her family, willing to do whatever it take to take care of them.
Ree's personality really was a big help to her while she was going to seek knowledge of where her father was. She was determined to get answers no matter what, even after being told of the consequences of going up to visit Thump, she still marched he self right on up to his house. Once she arrived she stood tall and quickly stated her purpose and need for information to Thumps Wife, but was never able to talk to Thump. Thumps Wife quickly told her to go and never to come back warning her of the harm that she would cause herself if she did. Though she did not receive answers on her first trip, in going to Thump's house she showed how much courage and determination she had to fix the situation. Without her specific personality I do not believe she would have been able to have the same determination.
How she grew up and where she grew up are big factors when looking at why has such a strong and independent personality. She had to grow up fast, having to take care of her two younger siblings her sick mother and daily household chores. She had no time to be young. I believe all these responsibilities caused her to have to put a front on and be strong for her family, putting all emotions aside.

  1. Ree did show a lot of responsibility when she found out her family might lose everything. Your completely right when you stated that it was because of her personality and where she was raised. Being able to handle everything that Ree has to deal with is very strong for anyone to handle. I wonder if she wasn't raised in a household that was in a horrible area or if her mother wasn't so ill and able to do something to help if Ree wouldn't be as independent and strong for her family. If she just would have left it to her mother or if she would have done the same thing anyway, maybe it was just her personality in the long run. Putting her family's needs before hers is who she is.
