Finding One’s Self

In life, one of the most important goals that everyone should achieve is finding one’s self. I do not believe one can truly live a happy and prospering life if they do not know who they are. Once finding your purpose in life, so many windows and doors of opportunity open up to you. You find out who you want to be and that becomes your life-long goal. So far, throughout this semester I believe finding one’s self is the most captivating theme for many reasons. I can see demonstrations of how Harry Potter is on the way to finding himself in the book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, along with the objective of Susan Cain’s book, Quiet, and finding out whether you are an introvert or extrovert or many other possible characteristics one might acquire.  Another reason I believe this to be the most captivating theme this semester is because recently, I have found out more about myself, who I was, and who I want to be. I have been able to figure out not only who I want to be but I have also physical achieved things to be one step closer to accomplishing those goals.
In, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry endures so many unfortunate issues in his life. From a loss of both parents to living with his own family who could care less about him. He was pretty much forced to grow up and find out who he is and who he wants to be on his own. When receiving notice about going away to Hogwarts, he began to find himself. He seemed to be hesitant with this lifestyle because he was unsure of what it involved. As soon as school began and he was showed how to control magic and more things that he could do with this gift, I think he became more enlightened with his blessing.  Finding true friends like Ron and Herminie also helped Harry begin his journey of finding himself. Being able to find good friends, and knowing more about his gift, Harry has been able to become one step closer of finding out who he really is.

In, Quiet, Susan begins discussing what introverts and extroverts are. With her countless numbers of research that went into writing this book, she explains to the readers situations and depending on what you would do in that situation, you were consider either an introvert, or extrovert. She provided the readers with an introvert-extrovert spectrum and told them to answer each statement either true or false. If you had more true than false answers you were considered to be more introverted and if you answered with more false, you were considered to be more extroverted. This spectrum is just another way that this semester has been full of people finding their own self, and who they want to be. Not only are they figuring out who they want to be, knowing information such as whether you’re an introvert or extrovert can help you figure out more facts about yourself and further you on your journey to finding out who you really are.

  1. Hello Michelle!

We had quite similar topics. I chose Personal Integrity, and I outlined the importance to maintain one's self. You, on the other hand, made a great investigation of the characters and their journeys. Being able to identify 'who you are" is a very important step in the process of self-actualization. The only difference between our themes is that yours is discovery, while Personal Integrity is maintenance. Obviously, discovery is very important before maintenance of that discovery, so your theme is very integral.

  2. I always knew that it is important to find your self. You do not want to be anyone else because they are already taken. It is crazy though how at the end of every year I look backs at my past and see how I have changed. Every day on new years I see what I could do to become better and then again at the end of the year see if I have achieved or maybe I have done better. I try to find myself everyday because I do agree with you when you said one could not live a truly happy life if they do not know who they are. The book Quiet did help me a little more when the author started talking about introvert and extrovert like you said. This was a very good post and I hope you end up being happy with yourself!
