In the seven book Harry Potter series, there are three
individuals that become best friends and the main characters. The series
focuses on Harry Potter, the main character, and how he grows through the years
at Hogwarts. In Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer Stone, Harry meets Ron Wesley on the train to Hogwarts which becomes
the start to their lifelong friendship. Hermione Granger is also introduced on
the train to Hogwarts and it is clear that she has a standalone personality.
Hermione is very confident and comes off a snobby
know-it-all. A few passages stand out when I think about how Hermione’s
personality and how it affects her ability to gain knowledge. One passage is
when the three are in the first potions class and Snape is picking on Harry and
he couldn’t answer any of the questions. Meanwhile Snape was ignoring Hermione,
was ambitiously raising her hand trying to answer each of the questions. Now
there is always that one student in class, who typically sits near the front
and tries to answer all the questions. From observations, these students are
typically liked or they don’t have a lot of friends. If that is the case, then the
most of them have nothing better to do than study which furthers their
knowledge. Another passage where Hermione is shown to be snarky is when she is reprimanding
Harry for thinking about dueling Malfoy. I can’t help but to think about those
people who are “mother hens.” For example, when you’re out with a group of
friends and there is that one friend who is always questioning everything the
group is doing. Hermione’s knowledge does come in handy numerous times
throughout the book and a lot throughout the rest of the series.
