In the book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, one of the main characters
of the story show great independence, determination, and strength throughout
the entire book. Early on in the book, the reader finds out that Harry had to
deal with the loss of not just one parent, but both. He had to move into a home
where he did not feel wanted or loved. His Aunt and Uncle treated him as if he
was nothing and most times did not even speak a single word to him. Through all
of horrible treatment Harry has gotten between losing the people he loved, and
now having to deal with his own family that doesn't care about him, Harry still
has a huge heart. The way his Aunt and Uncle used to treat him, he could have treated them the same way; with disrespect. Being the good person he was, he still always said "please" and "thank you" to his Aunt and Uncle whenever inappropriate and never once disrespected either of them. This shows the amount of strength he has when he literally
had nothing in his life but still chooses to better himself and stay a good
person.
“It didn't come…he kept running…he opened his
eyes.” (93). One of my favorite parts in this book is when it happened to be
Harry’s first time catching the train to Hogwarts. The anticipation and hoping
that Harry would not crash into the wall was at an extreme high for me. At this
very scene was when the readers could really understand who Harry was. You
could tell how independent but determined he was by when his Uncle and Aunt
just dropped him off and didn't help them look for the train with him. He even
went up to people who worked at the train station and asked if they knew where
his train was. Being shot down by his family, and someone who worked there,
Harry still didn't give up. Finally he had heard someone talking about Hogwarts
and immediately took action. The mother of several students noticed Harry
listening in and instantly started explaining what to do and how to get to the
train. After all, Harry listened to the women, and he began his journey to
Hogwarts for the semester.
This is always a fun part to read and watch! It shows Harry's bravery as he is trusting in this new life of his! I can't imagine I would be brave enough to run as fast as I could through a wall, with faith that I will not be harmed! It would be all to easy to run into something on the other side even if you did get through this invisible porthole. Although, I'm sure I'd be just as determined to get away from my abusive aunt and uncle, so there was really no other choice in the matter.
