Ron's Curiosity

Page 98 of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone we find Ron and Harry meeting for the first time aboard the Hogwart’s Express.

“Are you really Harry Potter?” Ron blurted out. Harry nodded.
…”and have you really got – you know…” He pointed at Harry’s forehead.
Harry pulled back his bands to show the lightning scar. Ron stared.
“So that’s where You-Know-Who --?”
“Yes,” said Harry, “but I can’t remember it.”
“Nothing?” said Ron eagerly.
“Well – I remember a lot of green light, but nothing else.”
“Wow”, said Ron.

As we get this first glimpse of the beginning of this life long relationship, we immediately recognize that Ron is curious. He quickly asks Harry questions, the things he’s wondered about his whole life. To be exact, he “blurted” out his question. He was just boiling over, he just had to know and he had to know right now! This showed his bravery early on, a small part of it, but something that grew in him with time. His curiosity and out-right personality helped him to learn this information about his new friend.

It’s also interesting to note that although Ron is forward and direct, he is still slightly hesitant. Perhaps because he is being cautious of his social manners, afraid he might be rude to ask. This is why he stumbles a bit over his words, not even finishing his sentences, in hopes that Harry with respond quickly and show Ron that his curiosity is alright by him. Luckily, Harry isn’t shy about himself, he easily responded to the questions with openness and honesty. He could sense in Ron’s tone and questions that he was an honest person, he was a good guy, and these two personalities clicked.

  1. When thinking about Ron I feel that you got who he is right on the head. When reading Harry Potter I did as well notice that Ron cared a lot about what people thought about him. Being an honest but nervous/shy guy is who Ron is. Like you said Harry was the complete opposite of Ron which was good because sometimes you need a good friend that is different then yourself. Ron did have a tendency to blurt the wrong things out at certain times but luckily having Harry at his side helped Ron in many situations.

  2. Great post. Ron is definitely curious and sometime it gets him into trouble. He becomes a loyal friend and brings Harry home to his family. The Weasley's teach Harry what it is like to belong to a loving, supportive family. They show him what it is like to grow up in a wizarding family.

  3. Curiosity is a great tool to gain knowledge! Ron is not the brightest or the bravest of the group but his curiosity does help them figure many things out. It is always fun to see what each individual can bring to the table.

  4. Like Travis says as well, Ron is not the brightest or the bravest but his curiosity has gotten him in trouble as well as far. Ron is definitely an honest person and Harry can see these traits which is why Harry is so drawn to Ron. Curiosity is vital as well with Ron since he is always asking questions and because of his forwardness, at times, it may make him seem socially awkward.
