The story
presented in winter’s Bone is a coming of age for the main character Ree Dolly.
As we saw in this film, the development of Ree begins at a young age where she
observed the conduct of women in her community and within her family. The women
in her community and family were expected to be submissive to their husband or
the father figure. Women in this film lose their voices and self-power in an attempt
to obey social expectations of the community. The role of women observed in
this film are to cook, clean and take care of the home. One scene from the
movie that explained this was when Ree went to visit her friend Gail’s home in
help of finding her father. Gail couldn’t help her because her husband denied
her the right to leave the house. Gail had to take orders from her husband since
she felt that it was the best thing to do. This was so that she could live up
to society’s expectation.
The coming of age scene for Ree that is shown in the
film is when she decides to take a different path than what society expects. Her
brave determination was not a quality learned by role models in her community,
but a heroic attempt to uphold her personal freedom. Her struggles begin when
she learns that her father had put the house up for bond if he doesn't shows up
for his court date. At this point her life took a different path, she now had
to challenge society norms in order to survive and find out the truth. This was
a difficult journey for Ree, as we watched the obstacles she had to overcome in
finding her true identity. At the end of the film, Ree found out the truth about
her father’s disapprance. More importantly she overcame the norms for women in
her community.
Lovefelia you brought up a very unique insight. There is so much going on in this movie, and the tones tend to be so dark at times that a lot is missed, even though it's being seen. As a guy, raised by women, I actually clearly remembered the husband who vetoed the use of the truck. I remember that bothered me quite a bit as clearly his life wasn't going anywhere..so what's the loss. Women have come such a long way, and against such foolish odds as the pompous male stands in the way. This was a great movie to express what women have within them, which is no fiction of film, but the plain facts. Ree did find her voice within this film and it was inspiring to see. I enjoyed this post.

ReplyDeleteI like the point of view you took with this! She definitely stood out among the other women in the movie! As I was reading this I was thinking how sad it is that some girls I know do the same things with their significant other, their personalities have completely changed and they are very submissive. It is very sad that that is still happening even though the movie is set in the past. Ree pushes those boundaries to get what she want and it works great! Ree refuses to take no for an answer no matter what sex she is. I thought specifically about when Ree is trying to get information from Milton's wife and she says, "Dont you have a man to do this for ya". Shows just how male dominated that time was. Nice perspective!

ReplyDeleteI did not get to see this movie yet, but by your passage Ree Dolly really seems like she is brave. The fact that she will just go a different route then what every else has been doing. She seems like such a strong person trying to survive in the world she has grown up in. I can only imagine the different types of problems and struggles she approached. She seems like a true role model that young girls can look at. It is good to be yourself and fight for whatever you want and love. You did a good job on portraying this character.
This film seems like a very interesting take on older norms. I personally enjoy when a characters has to see past what is wrong to get to what they feel is right. It provides something for the audience to relate to plus I just despise social norms. Nothing says that I don’t practice them myself from time to time but sometimes you just have to do what you want and not care what others think. You’re bound to find someone who will agree with what you soon enough. Then you receive a new companion and are a few steps closer to changing the world.
