I personally don’t think that NASA should be held accountable
for public opinion. Like any other study they can take surveys and ask questions
because there might actually be some people that feel that it is an excellent
idea. They have can’t read the minds of everyone and if everyone is paying for
it then everyone should be able to decide what it gets used for. It is an
interesting concept, being able to have sex in space that is. I never would
have thought that this was a topic of interest among scientists or anyone of
that matter. Wanting to have children born on Mars is a new idea to me. I had
no idea that this was being thought of. It would be pretty amazing though to
actually give birth to a human on mars and have them be able to survive. There is
certainly much research that still needs to be conducted before this is ever implemented
in space or on Mars. If this is something that scientists want to be able study
then they need to start. They should not have to worry about public opinion as
much as I think they are making it seem they will. If it starts to become too
big of a controversial topic then they can figure out what to do form there. That
is only if it becomes a controversial topic. For all they know it could get a
great response from the public and they have been wasting time worrying that
the public won’t approve. Personally I think that they should start the studies
and try not to harm the animals too much.
It's funny how taboo subjects can be so negatively received. Sex in space, yes it is weird, but it is a very natural thing. I believe that scientists should be studying a full spectrum of topics about space, and biology is a very large component to this. Public opinion can often be short-sighted. The long term to this research could be staggering, and it could contribute to overall living conditions in space as advancements increase.
ReplyDeletePersonally, sex amongst the astronauts matters not to me except for the fact that sex can lead to human life. Astronauts deserve their alone time and hey, if they want to try to get some, go for it! However, research into this falls to the back burner for me. Like I said, the possibility of a human life being created by this research is scary. We do not even know what the long term effects of being in space has on the adult human body, let alone what it might do to a fetus, There is too much unknown to be focusing on sex of all things. Let the astronauts have their fun then ask questions later but don't make it a focus of research until we know more about the basics of human life in space.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea of taking surveys. I also agree that the public should decide what their hard earned money goes to. If I was a single parent with mouths to feed, work two jobs just to support my children's health and education, I would not want my money going towards an experiment like this. I think it would make me angry knowing that I'm working hard and part of my money is going to that. However, I don't have kids or two jobs. But I am a college student who has to work hard for her money. I want my money to go to me... not this experiment.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you state that NASA should not be held accountable to public opinion. I think this is an interesting subject to research as well. We could potentially end up populating Mars down the road as a result of this research, and this is certainly worth looking into. It really would be something for a child to be born on Mars, then more importantly have humans being born there regularly. If we have a potential new home, then NASA should be able to study this at their whim. A thing such as the public's opinion should not be what hinders our ability to further explore space.
