The Universe

When someone says the word "Universe," the words that come to mind are things like: world, unattainable, big. When we think about the Universe, it is a really big universe, but we only know so little about it. There are so many things that are out there that we don't know about. Things that maybe we could know about at any given point in time. In Packing For Mars, a chapter of it talks about people who would go to space and check things out. Sometimes things like this can make people anxious because we don't know what's out there to find out or what's going to happen once we get to the place we're looking for. A lot of people like to think of the universe as the "world" but they both mean the same thing. Then, when you say world, we like to think of our planet Earth because that is the world/planet that we live on. The universe is such a big place in the world that, there are so many places that you can travel to. Countries/places like China, Africa, South America. If I had to go to the universe or "space" as some like to call it, I probably would be very anxious for a few reasons. One is I would probably be traveling there by myself and I really don't like to travel by myself at all. Two, learning how to power up the ship that I would be flying there in would be nerve racking because I know nothing about machinery. Three, just going there looking around and exploring would be pretty cool, but the mask that I would have to wear in order to breathe over there, would have a time limit on it, so I would be very scared that I would be running out of air to breathe and not making it back to my ship at night.

  1. It is unbelievable how much science is out there and how much we've learned about the universe. Then at the same time how incredible is it to realize how little we actually know about it, how much farther we have to go in the scheme of things?! I've always wanted to travel the world and having only made it through Eastern Europe I can't believe how much more I have to go just on this Earth! It would be amazing to see the planets up close, to walk on the moon.

  2. Thinking about the universe really can be a trouble. We really don't know the size of the universe and to make it worse, it is believed that the universe is constantly expanding. To add to the complication, it isn't even known what shape the universe is. Is it like a square sheet ever expanding, or is it a ball that is being blown up. The universe could have holes in them (like a donut), or could be folded over on itself. There really is just way too much that we don't know about the Universe.
