Curious...

Sex is one of the most taboo yet normal processes that a human can experience. It has many connotations. Good being passion or love, or bad being animal-like or obscene. The reality is that sex is a healthy and necessary function for many living things, especially humans. How about sex in space? What connotations does that leave? In the context of the video, people seem to believe that allowing the study of sex in space is only a fun and demeaning purpose of space research. Going back to Earth, this idea is rather similar. People seem to believe that sex based education leads to greater frequency in sexual encounters, especially in adolescents, but this is not the case. Sex based education has actually been shown to promote healthy models of sexual conduct and better overall choices. If our misconceptions on Earth are so far off, then what about space? Sex in space can lead to various different studies that could help us in the future. Whether we like it or not sex is hard-wired in our biology, and it can affect us psychologically. When space expeditions grow longer venturing deeper into outer space, humans still have to be humans. Intimacy, love and sex cannot be ignored because it can have very negative consequences to the mind. The physical study is actually very important as well in terms of procreation. What if an astronaut becomes pregnant? The study of sex and its relationship in space can reveal if the astronaut can have a healthy child in space, be able to have a safe travel home or function properly. The same is true fro the distant future. There are going to be expeditions that may last a century. Yes, a century. There has to be some form of procreation in ensuring the success and continuation of the expedition. Sex is more than "fun", it is vital component to people and their futures in space.

  1. Your post was one of the few that talked about sex and not just reproduction. While reading through the posts I started thinking about how a space program would handle gay astronauts. This leads to a lot more issues on many levels. Would space programs be able to discriminate against gay astronauts for space colonization missions? Gay astronauts still have the capability to reproduce, but would they choose to. If we are unsure about whether we are studying heterosexual relations for reproduction purposes, think of all the troubles there would be for studying homosexual relations.

  2. I agree with your idea. I think having sex in the universe does not mean they waste the taxpayers' money. The astronauts do the researching in the universe need to get over a lot of problems with their psychology and physiology. Having sex is the nature desire since the ancient time, and it can also relieve some stress for the astronauts. A pleasant mental and physical environment can let the work be more effective.
