Sex is space is an incredibly
important topic that I hadn't thought about in any significant detail prior to
this documentary, and I’m glad to have gained some perspective. Someday in the
future, earth’s population will be zero due to some series of events, and we’ll
hopefully be colonized to some extent elsewhere. At that moment in time, we
need to have developed a consistently safe method that allows sex, embryo
development, and successful birth of a healthy child in space, or our race will
disappear with the last person up there. It’s going to take a lot of research
and testing to develop that method.
NASA is arguably the most important
organization on earth, only competing with other countries’ space exploration
programs for that title. Space is the future, and the idea that NASA’s actions
and government funding are dictated primarily by public opinion is very sad. I
don’t believe the first major task should be making a “cuddle tunnel” or
something of the sort, but it’s definitely a future idea. Once a crew is put
through proper emotional handling testing on earth, they should be free to have
a shuttle with a safe, small compartment dedicated to sex. Once that easy part
of sex in space is designed, all time and research can be directed towards how
to successfully give birth to a healthy baby, which is the true focus. The
public may majorly view the topic of “sex in space” as all pleasure and a waste
of money. Sex is a basic need, and will only increase our astronauts’
productivity. That’s why public opinion can’t fully be taken into account, as
many are misinformed and not seeing the whole picture.
