Blog post # 8- How to define the Universe

When I looked at the blog assignment for this week I wasn't really sure how to respond to it. I thought about it for a day and asked a few of my co-workers, what is the universe to you? I received quite a few varied answers. Some people answered with "my job", "my kids", "the stars and the planets", or "my animals". It really made prompted me to think about how we all view the universe as something different, how we a lot of us view our lives, or the things in our lives as the center of the universe.

When I think about the universe after reading Packing for mars, it makes me feel small. Especially when I imagine what it must have felt like to be among the first to venture into it. It also makes me wonder, if given the chance would I step out of what I perceived as "my universe" to venture into this great wide universe that surrounds us?

In short, it made me feel like I couldn't describe the universe, because everyone has their own definition of what the universe is. To me my universe includes the sun, moon, stars and everything beyond what I can see in the night sky. It also includes my everyday universe, what makes me get out of bed in the morning, what drives me through the day,  I don't know if I'd be able to conquer the fear of the unknown and venture into the great unknown, but I do know that I can conquer the fear to tackle the unknown of my everyday.

  1. When I described my idea of the universe I didn't really think of my universe. I am glad you described the universe as it pertains to your life. Your life is a huge part of the universe. The universe in a general sense is very similar for everyone but personal universes revolve a lot around what's most important to them. I agree those that were the first to travel into the unknown were brave souls and I know I couldn't have the courage to do that.

  2. Kay,
I agree with you because so many things come to mind when a question like “How would you describe the universe?” is asked. Everyone has their own version of the definition of the universe and it is unique to each person. Some people don’t include the things outside of their lives, while others include everything. I am one those people that includes everything in their definition of the universe because all of it is a part of who we are. I also feel small when I think of everything else that the universe includes, but I don’t think I would be able to explore our universe, but maybe just read about it.
