I don’t
think it is possible to really know why humans want to venture into the
unknown. The only thing we can do is throw out possible ideas of why we do it
and try to reason them out, so that is exactly what I am going to do! I think
there are two closely related reasons why we want to venture into the unknown.
One reason is to look for something beneficial to us, and the other reason is
to protect what we already have. The first reason I believe is more
straightforward. Humans like to improve themselves (or at least be better than
those around them). We used to have to venture out to find our food to survive,
and then we made a huge step forward and started inventing tools to make our
lives easier. This started a new search for ideas that would further help us.
We continued to search for new materials and new knowledge and kept improving.
This is something that we will continue to do (maybe we are never satisfied or
maybe we always want more than our neighbor).
Now for the second reason. Once you have acquired what you want, you will start to take steps to secure it. This includes finding things that will help you protect it and identifying things that might harm it. Examples of identifying things that intent harm can be a caveman looking outside his cave to see any dangerous animals and, more relevant to the videos we watched, looking into space to find dangers that may come. The second example there is a worry to some and that is why it is believed that we need to keep exploring. It also gives stock to the idea that humans should be at least a two planet species and we need to expand in order to protect something we care about, ourselves.
i agree with you that it is not possible to really know why humans want to venture into the unknown. human as a whole are noisy set of species, we love to venture into the unknown. like you said, we venture into the unknown to look for something beneficial to us, and to protect what we already have. i also agree with you as well.
