The Final Frontier

I believe it only takes one word in order to describe the universe. I believe the universe is a mystery. I am sure almost all of us have heard space be referred to as the final frontier (even if you haven’t seen Star Trek). Outer space and the universe is something that has fascinated mankind for centuries. In elementary school we learned about the ancient Greek astronomers studying the sky, we learned about the planets and constellations, and we learned about the moon landing. All of these are things that people find so interesting, and yet it is just the very beginning of our adventure into space.

While I do appreciate all the exciting exploration that can be done, I am very much into math and science. What this means is not that I do not care about the far reaches of the universe, it actually means that I find it even more exciting. The physics of the universe has many unknowns. Most of the stuff we do “know” is only proven through observations that may not hold up under all conditions. There are still a lot of experiments to do and so much more to learn.  Recently I read a hypothetical question about two objects in space, very very far away from each other and what would happen if nothing interfered with them. Some people offered up the sound argument that gravity would have a small, yet ever increasing effect on them that would attract the two together. Then someone else mentioned the idea that we would have to account for the universe is expanding (which is a currently held belief by most scientists), and the universe would expand faster than the two objects could come together. After taking all of this into account, I decided that while the explanations were reasonable, everyone was just taking their best guess. There are probably a dozen other variables that were not taken into account. I guess the true answer to the question, along with the rest of the universe, will just have to remain a mystery for now.

  1. I liked your post and the way you describe the universe as a mystery. You can never truly know everything and what you think you know is always changing.
