Mind Games

When we were assigned this book I wasn’t really sure what to expect because space isn’t really something that has gotten my attention before. However, while reading this book chapter 3 really stuck out to me. I think what’s so interesting is what is going through the minds of the astronauts about to do something unimaginable. The first sentence really got me interested in what was ahead in the chapter, "climb inside this capsule and let us blast you, alone and at great peril, past the borderline of space. Let us catapult you into an airless, lethal nothingness, where no man has ever been. Whip around the planet, and then come down and tell us what it was like for you" (65). It just kind of gave me a feeling of what it could be like to experience something so crazy. I liked how it talked about the barriers psychologists thought the astronauts would have a hard time overcoming when traveling to space and then all the different reactions from the ones actually going. I cannot imagine what I would feel if I were about to experience something so foreign to so many people. There was a lot of research done to hopefully prepare for the things they were about to go thought but I feel as if it’s impossible to be prepared for everything they may encounter. That alone would make me very anxious about the trip. On the flip side there must have been such a rush knowing they were about to do something so amazing. They were going to see and experience something that a large majority of people wouldn’t ever get to do.

  1. I would absolutely never want to try this. I am a person who is not that adventurous. this did not intrigue me because I know that I would never be crazy enough to try it. Yes it is all fun and games until something goes wrong. I would rather be in the large majority of people who would never get to try it. I think I would pass out before it was my turn.

  2. I, like you, had never thought of space as a topic of my interest, but this book definitely intrigued me! As a psychology major, I definitely wonder what goes on in astronauts minds before, during, and after going into space. It is something that a very small percentage of the population experience, but most definitely has a large affect on their minds, as well as bodies. Obviously, they think the risks are worth it, and I cant say as I blame them!
