It makes me wonder about the practicality of it. Why do we need to know so much about the universe? Maybe so we can avoid or prepare for a meteor, or maybe because eventually people will have to live in space for long periods of time. Packing For Mars shed light on many aspects of space that I had never thought about.
I think the Universe contains many large-scale objects that are very different from the objects and compositions that we are accustomed to, which is why we are so intrigued by it. The sun and planets are a complete different composition of the Earth (or at least the ratios of the elements are different). They are big, beautiful, different, and very far away! I think the challenge of figuring out these foreign planets is what pushes countries to be competitive in finding out anything and everything about them.
I could describe the Universe with the use of the objects is contains--stars, planets, moons--or by the mystery of the unknown, or by the contents of whats known. But no matter how it is described, it is intriguing and people are curious about it. They will forever be curious, because it will forever be unknown.
I asked about the importance of knowing just because if we do know, it would make life more boring. I think if we knew everything about the universe then we would no longer have that to ponder on and we would have a part of life figured out. I think you made a good point in how knowing would be useful for when a meteor is on it's way. I'm okay with the amount that we already know. I think we have got the farthest that we could and I'm content with that. I just don't want to know the whole thing. I like the mysteriousness of it.
ReplyDeleteEmily,
ReplyDeleteI also think that there will always be something we don’t know about the universe, which makes it so interesting. There is always going to be something to explore and learn about when it comes to the universe. I feel like people don’t like being left in the dark or know that something is out there that they don’t know about. People want answers and I don’t blame the ones that want to learn about the universe because I would want to know too. The unknown is fascinating and the people that devote their lives to finding out what the universe is all about are even more fascinating.
I agree with you that the universe is large and full of the unknown. I like how you mentioned the different ratios of elements of other planets. I think everyone is curious about space. Every child dreams of going to the moon, or being an astronaut. Space has always been and will always be at the peak of human interest.
