The Great Nothingness

When I think of the universe, I tend to think like a little kid, "WOOOOW!".  Many little kids at one time or another wanted to be an astronaut.  To me, the universe seems like a tricky but fascinating puzzle of emptyness.  Yes there are stars, planets, meteors, giants both big and small, etc. but its the not knowing beyond what we can see that intrigues me.  The universe may seem like a dead, frozen wasteland to some, but the more I learn about it, the more I want to know.  America may be the first people to land on the moon, but I feel like the space race is far from over.  It would seem there are many factors in play to keep in mind when space traveling, but I feel like the experience outweighs the risk.  Space could become a bit boring overtime I suppose but, as the book "Packing for Mars" shows, astronauts are tested extensively to see if they have what it takes to put up with such things as boredom.  I definately do not think we are the center of the universe and I feel like space is far to vast to even coming close to comprehending.  With the way technology is advancing, our planet is going to explode with information about space and its secrets.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this post for many reasons. The first thing that I found intriguing about what you had to say was how you said, "...it's the not knowing beyond what we can see that intrigues me." I could not agree more with this statement. There are so many questions that surface to my mind when I think about the universe and everything it entails. It is fascinating to me that we will never know all the answers to the questions that we have because we are so limited on the knowledge it would take to understand the universe. I also like that you talked about the experience outweighing the risk of space travel. For me, I personally would not be able to go into a space shuttle and take off. I understand there is extensive training, but there is no way I would be able to find the strength within myself to accomplish such a huge task. With this being said, I truly do think that the experience would outweigh the risk which is why I do appreciate those who are willing to go through such extensive training to answer some of the questions that have been brought up. The universe is like a great nothingness. There's nothing for miles in miles, but that's the beauty of it.

  2. I am most intrigued on how much training not just physical but mental as well that the astronauts have to go through to be able to be one of the select few that are able to have that amazing experience. I don't believe that I would have the strength it takes to be able to do what they do. I think we will see a lot more advancements in what we find out when it comes to space exploration. Technology is helping with that everyday. Space is definitely a nothingness worth exploring.
