I found this chapter to be very interesting for many reasons. Mainly because having recently returned from being on a boat for 7 days I have still been feeling very sea sick and have been getting very bad motion sickness-luckily not to the point of actually vomiting. This chapter explained why better than my doctor did.
The chapter discusses the challenges of vomiting in space. Which is something I never even considered but when reading the chapter I had an aha! moment. Especially when reading the simple quote "even fish can get seasick" on page 122. It made me recall a type of fish- the sheepshead, that have "stones" next to their brains that they use for navigation. It also turned into some research into whether fish can vomit. The short answer is yes they can.
The whole chapter and the science about why we get motion sickness and how this can seriously impact astronauts (career wise and mission wise) was something I had never thought about before-or actually even considered.
The whole book was an interesting read but I think that chapter 6 will stick with me forever.
Kay,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. It seemed like you really enjoyed reading Chapter six in the book. Some of my family and I get seasick/motion sickness when we are on boats or airplanes too. I never really thought that fish could vomit at all because they live in water anyway. It was very interesting to me when you mentioned that fish could actually vomit. Isn't it a little weird to be swimming in your own vomit? If I had to swim in my own vomit, I think that would be really bad. However, they are fish so they live in water. Anyways, I really loved your post, Kay. Great job!
