It's a Small World

Space is often referred to as “the final frontier.” However, with millions of miles of deep-sea ocean still unexplored, I think everyone can define “frontier” differently. In that same sense, I believe everyone has his or her own unique concept of the universe. I think that some people see objects, jobs, and ideas as the center of his or her universe, meaning that individuals define their lives and everything in it by one thing or other person. Scientifically, of course, that’s not the case. The universe is typically described in relation to our cosmic address. We’ve got Earth, our solar system, are galaxy, our galaxy cluster and so on and so forth. To me, however, it’s hard to always think in such large-scale terms. When going through my day, I can’t say that I always think of my universe as the cosmos. I think of my universe as what defines me everyday. Personally, that involves my family, my friends, my sport, and my academics. The first definition I’ve seen of “universe” is, “all existing matter and space consisting as a whole.” Basically the way I see the universe, then, is that what defines your world as whole? I understand the cosmos make up the universe. That every star, asteroid, planet, and larger systems are what’s considered to be that concept, but I have difficulty stopping every day and saying, “This is mundane because the universe is so much larger than me and my problems.” Well, my problems are sometimes large compared to me. My description of the universe might be small compared to the scientific one, but that’s because humans are small. We as individuals are insignificant in comparison to the sun, but we have significant value in each other.

  2. The universe is limitless and I am sure many of us think of the stars and planets when we think of the universe - which is what I usually think of. When someone asks what does your universe revolve around I do not think about the stars I do think of my family and friends. That is a great point. It is crazy to think of the universe - scientifically - being so large and that we are only a very very small part of the whole. It is kind of creepy to think of it that way.

  3. I love the different aspect you put this in. you took the prompt and turned it into a whole new way that I would not think of. The first thing I thought of was stars and planets and how huge it is, and you took it in a small view. I really enjoyed reading your blog! Your title got me the most too because you said, “It’s a Small World” and the first thing I thought about was “the Universe is not small” so it made me really want to read yours. You did a very nice job with this blog.

  4. Megan,
I enjoyed your post! You brought up many things that I had not thought out. I had only thought about the Universe being the stars, galaxies, the different atmospheres, the planets and the orbits. I had not thought of what the Universe could mean to someone as a whole and what makes someone who they are. I think that is an extremely interesting concept. It's also crazy to think about how small we as humans are compared to how big the Universe actually is.
