Star Gazing
While reading chapter three of packing for mars by Mary Roach. I found it most interesting reading about the different space missions that first happened. In the beginning of space exploration they started off by shooting people just a little out to space to see what the earth looked like from space and found that the first few people didn't want to leave the capsules when they got back to earth from space. They started calling them star crazy, which leads us to the title of the chapter, with the subtitle question "Can space blow your mind?". In this chapter I found the section where they were explaining the one astronaut White's experience where he went out of his capsule to explore and be out in space. While he was out there for a long time and they were asking him to come back in and he said to hold on he was taking pictures and at that point Roach wrote "Rather than worrying about astronauts not wanting to come back in, the space agencies should have been worrying about them not being able to." This part interested me because I've always been the one to stop and take pictures and get distracted by things that other people just over look. The fact is that this is the reason they changed the function of going into space and getting back to the ship. Getting back to the ship without gravity took to long, while white was trying to get back in it took him 25 minutes to get back in. Over all this section really interested me because of the interesting stories of going into space for the first times as trial and error.

This chapter of trial and error was particularly interesting. I liked learning about the previous missions and what gave way for space travel today. It is intriguing to think about what it would be like coming back after being out in space. It's almost like a person coming back from a foreign country after a long time, war, or anywhere very different with different circumstances. There is probably a long time of adjustment for astronauts getting used to earth life again. It kind of makes you think that they might feel like aliens themselves.
ReplyDeleteGood post. I agree that reading about the missions was cool. I am also someone that likes to stop and look if it is something interesting to me. I like to take pictures but there are some things and experiences that I just love to keep in my mind and not have pictures to show everyone. To just have that image in my head is all I need. I feel that if I got to go into space and feel the feeling of no gravity, that would be a moment to just take in and keep to myself forever.
