Social Media: Not Neccesarily the Death of All Things Intimacy

Social media has effected intimacy in many ways, and they are not necessarily all negative either.  I believe in some senses that social media has made intimacy more possible and I plan to elaborate on this point further along in this essay.  For example, a soldier could be stationed overseas and is not able to home for his anniversary with his wife.  Thanks to Skype, FaceTime or a number of other video chatting applications, he can now at least have a face to face conversation on their anniversary.  So in this case, one could argue that the social media has preserved the intimacy of the marriage in a sense; simply by allowing a face to face conversation in a situation that would otherwise be impossible.
In many cases people believe that social media kills intimacy, while it can bring people “together” even through a screen.  I could understand that generally this can be though to be the case, however I have found that social media can connect people together.  Families can talk with loved ones perhaps still stuck in their motherland, as opposed to just a letter.  If used correctly social media whether it be Email, Facebook or Skype, social media connects us all on a larger scale; and this is what I believe makes social media one of our (Mankind’s) greatest inventions to date.  Instant face to face conversations have made the world a smaller place and thusly again, conserving the intimacy that personal relationships have to offer, even if it is through a computer.

  1. I agree fully about the fact that it increases intimacy in some ways, some people don't feel comfortable being themselves with people at first and this helps people get to know others on a new and different level.

  2. I agree with you that social media and networking has in a sense brought us more together. You can now connect with people that aren’t around and can see think through a screen yes but are able to see them. Having the invention of skype and FaceTime have made it easier to stay connected with people we don’t get to see often and still get to though the screen. I also believe that social networking has not taken away personal intimacy but I do think that there will always be that intimacy among humans as a whole.
